About Me
My name is Anand Mistry, an Economics student studying at the University of Bristol. This summer I worked with Paryavaran Mitra in India. My main interests include sport, social development and of course, economics.
About Paryavaran Mitra
Paryavaran Mitra (PM) is a social
enterprise based in Gandhi Ashram, Ahmedabad, which uses waste management as a
tool to empower rag-picker women. Ineffective waste management in India means
littered roads are a common sight. Slum-dwelling women who have no level of
education go out in the early hours of everyday picking up this waste from the
roadside and sell it to earn an income to provide for their family.
Unfortunately, these women get exploited and do not get a fair return for their
work. PM have intervened in the market, with the aim of providing holistic
improvements for these women. They give fair returns for the women’s waste
collection, treat the women with love and respect, provide health services and
organise leisure activities for them. A natural positive consequence of their
work is that they are cleaning the streets, which means that waste that would
otherwise be piling up and contaminating the environment is instead being
recycled. The people who reside in these areas benefit from the women’s
work.
Specifically, I wrote a case study for PM about
their business model and the social impact that has resulted from PM’s market
intervention. I also organised and conducted workshops on social enterprise
models with business schools in Ahmedabad.
